About Us
Who we are
The Port Hedland RSL Sub-Branch is a proud community hub dedicated to honouring the service and sacrifice of past and present Defence Force members. We provide a welcoming space where veterans, their families and the wider community can come together for connection, support and social activities. Through commemorative services, community events and our not-for-profit initiatives, we aim to give back to Port Hedland while keeping the spirit of mateship and remembrance alive.
The Port Hedland RSL is a Sub-Branch of RSL WA, enabling our members to access services and supports offered by RSL WA, such as wellbeing and welfare support, advocacy for claims and entitlements, transition and employment services.
Our Mission and Vision
Our mission is to enable veterans and their families to thrive through sustainable, relevant support and services whilst retaining full confidence of community and all stakeholders.
Our vision is “We believe in enabling veterans and their families to thrive in the community”.
History of the League & RSL WA
RSL WA traces its origins back to 1916, a time when returned servicemen sought unity and fair treatment after facing hardship upon their return to Australia. Early veteran groups formed across the country, leading to the establishment of a national body in May 1916.
In Western Australia, the movement quickly expanded to include members of the 3rd Infantry Brigade, formally becoming the Returned Soldiers’ Association on 27 May 1916. The organisation’s first president was appointed that same year, and the Soldiers Welcome Institute served as its first permanent base in WA.
The WA branch was officially chartered on 25 April 1917 and has remained an active contributor to the national organisation ever since. Over time, the League’s name evolved to reflect the inclusion of all service branches and current serving members, eventually becoming the Returned & Services League of Australia in 1990.
Today, RSL WA continues to play a significant role at a national level, holding a seat on the RSL National Board while supporting veterans, service members and their families across Western Australia.
